How to register for the free version of Avast anti virus scanner

Posted by kypoth-Alex on Sep 27, 2009 in Online Security

I recommend Avast antivirus to most of my residential customers as it’s free and easy to look after. One thing that some people seem scared of though is registering it when their 60 day trial is up. I’m never sure why, it’s a quick thing to do and it really is free (for home users), you just need to register your email address with them so they can send you a license key. If you don’t register, your antivirus protection stops working, that puts your internet security at risk and that’s not a good thing. Read more…

Internet Security – Personal Considerations

Posted by kypoth-Alex on Sep 17, 2009 in Online Security

If you’re concerned about your on-line security, good, you should be. If you’re not, then prepare for the worst. Having your credit card abused by Somali warlords is one thing, but if someone steals your identity, you’re going to have a time trying to prove to the government, global corporation or the baliff banging on your door that you are you and not the other person who has re-mortgaged your house or cleaned out your life savings. Internet Security – Protecting Your Family

Posted by kypoth-Alex on Sep 17, 2009 in Online Security

If you have children, you should be concerned if they’re using the web. Just remember, the internet is the big, bad world and it’s all just a click away. If you wouldn’t be happy with your kids going to a nightclub in town on their own for the night, then you shouldn’t let them have unrestricted access to the internet. Read more…

Microsoft Office 2007 envelope printing issues

Posted by kypoth-Alex on Sep 17, 2009 in How To Fix ..., Software

I’ve just had a problem with a multi-user home PC where the secondary user couldn’t set envelope printing options in Office 2007 without them being reset everytime the feature was re-used. Even after configuring the envelope setup, it wouldn’t print the address label in the correct location. Read more…

Exchange 2007 email send delays after upgrading to managed Avast Net Server on SBS 2008

Posted by kypoth-Alex on Sep 10, 2009 in How To Fix ..., Software

Having trouble sending mail after a managed Avast Server installation? Another thing that you may need to remove from the default set up to make it work is the Internet Mail scanner from the server – it’s ok for the clients but stops the server from sending mail as it competes for the same port. Exchange 2007 Information Store not starting on SBS 2008 server after Avast Net Server installed

Posted by kypoth-Alex on Sep 10, 2009 in How To Fix ..., Software

I’ve just been working on a customer’s server set up, applying MS updates and fixing a problem with a PC not contacting the ADNM (Avast’s central management console). During the work, I noticed the main server wasn’t talking to the ADNM, which led to me realising it had a standalone Avast install on it. So I removed this and set up ADNM to deploy the Net Server package. As soon as this installed and the server reboooted, I started getting the SBS Console critical alerts thing flashing at me. Turns out the Exchange Information Store Service is failing to start, and won’t respond to a manual prod. Not good if you need to use email on the server. Read more…

Fixing the stylus from an O2 xda Orbit / Atom

Some things aren’t really worth fixing, and this is probably one of them. After all, I do have the spare one that came with it somewhere in the box. However, there’s a bit of a story behind this, and after all the hassle, it would have been defeatist to have put it in the bin. Read more…
